Sarah Humlie

Animal Services Manager

Sarah HumlieBackground with animals:

I have been working with animals professionally since 2008.  I have been in charge of a horse herd for summer camps and directed animal shelters. I started a low-cost spay and neuter clinic in Pensacola, FL to help reduce the number of unwanted litters in the community, and to make a Community Cat program possible.  I always look forward to my work day when animals are involved.

Favorite animal:

I love pelicans, horses and dolphins.

Pets you own:

Friend, a large mixed-breed dog; Hobie, an orange long-haired cat, and Lois, a sassy tortie.

Favorite part of your job:

I love providing kindness and care to animals in need, when they are hurt, lost or homeless.  Seeing them be adopted to new homes or reunited with their family is my favorite part.

Hobbies:

I like to swim, hike in the mountains with my dog, ride horses, and spend time with my family.

Rollend Fields

Customer Service Manager

Rollend FieldsBackground with animals:

Although we didn’t have pets my entire childhood I was fortunate enough to spend part of my childhood with two dogs and the occasional goldfish.

Favorite animal:

I don’t know if it’s because I’m a Kings fan and love Slamson or because I grew up a Disney baby but I’d have to say my favorite animal is a lion and everything that is represents.

Pets you own:

We are currently without a pet in our home at this time we recently had a Yorkie named “Winston” that got out. I’m sure working for the shelter our vacancy will be short lived.

Favorite part of your job:

The favorite part of my job is the ability to interact with the citizens of Elk Grove.

Hobbies:

I currently serve as an assistant coach with the Monterey Trail Mustangs Men’s basketball team. In my free time I enjoy spending it with the program and my family.

 Gerald Skibby

Animal Control Officer

Gerald SkibbyBackground with animals:

Growing up my family had 3 Rottweiler’s and a Collie.  I have always loved dogs and from a young age had a knack for training them.  I began working with animals in August of 2001 when I was hired by the Sacramento SPCA.  There, I received a ton of hands-on training which helped my transition to Animal Control.  I worked for the SPCA until March of 2008 at which point I was hired by Elk Grove. I have attended numerous trainings and academies related to Animal Control which have helped my progression in this field.

Favorite animal:

My favorite animal would have to be a dog, however, the right cat can be amazing as well.  Dogs can tell you so much if you just pay attention to them.  Their body language depicts their mood and if you have the time for them it’s extremely easy to accommodate their needs.  They’re goofy, loyal, attentive, and just want to be part of your pack.

Pets you own:

Currently, I own 2 dogs and 1 cat.  Walter, our Shih Tzu, is a little over 1 year old.  He is full of zest and loves to cuddle.  Sometimes I have to make sure he is still breathing because he goes limp if you hold him and he won’t move.  Ozzy, our Pomeranian, is 5 years old.  He changed my view on small dogs as I have always been a big dog kind of guy.  He’s amazing with my kids and is very smart.  Most of the time he is my wife’s dog – he follows her everywhere.  If she is home I don’t exist, unless of course its dinner time, in which case I’m the most amazing person for about 2 minutes. My cat Jack, is a Maine Coon mix, and is almost 9 years old.  He is the best cat I have ever owned.  I’m not sure he knows he is a cat.  I call him my parrot because he likes to jump to my shoulders and hang out up there as I do chores around the house.  He lets you do all the things most cats will not tolerate like rubbing his belly – he loves it.

Favorite part of your job:

Education.  Over the years the biggest issue I come across is people are not aware of the resources available to them.  There are tons of low-cost vaccination and spay/neuter clinics out there to assist people in keeping their animals healthy and current on their vaccines.  Additionally, there are low-cost animal trainers who can help you understand your pet and find a way to communicate with them so all involved are happy.  I also come across people all too often who haven’t considered how much time and effort goes into caring and raising an animal.  It literally is like having a child.  They need guidance, structure, and discipline.  Seems simple enough but it takes a great time and effort on the owners part to end up with a well-mannered, obedient animal.  The animals that aren’t given these tend to have more behavioral problems and at times can be very aggressive.  And last but not least – know the breed you are adopting.  Do some research to help set you up for success with your animal.

Hobbies:

I love being outdoors.  I enjoy fishing, camping, and hunting.  I also like sports and am on a co-ed softball team here in Elk Grove.  I go on bike rides with my kids and in general love being active.

Micheal Hildebrandt

Animal Control Officer

Background with animals:

Michael HildebrantMy journey started as a volunteer at the Atchison Humane Society (AHS) completing community service hours for high school and from there it took off!  I worked at AHS for about four years, during my time there I cleaned kennels, managed volunteers, administered vaccines, and my favorite assignment of event planning.

In 2010, I graduated from high school and moved to Las Vegas, NV with my older sister, In June 2010, I joined the Army National Guard.  After completing my initial training, I was back.  In April 2011, I began working at The Animal Foundation (TAF) located in Las Vegas.  There, I was a supervisor in the kennel department responsible for 18-20 employees, It was quite a journey at TAF during my time there.  The shelter would see about 50,000 animals a year, most of which would come through my department.

I returned to Sacramento and began working for the City of Folsom at the Folsom Zoo.  I began in the ticket booth and eventually got into the zoo keeping on some days.  Some of the animals I took care of included: macaques, squirrel monkeys, zebus, deer, bobcats, wolves, and a hybrid and some farm animals.

In July 2015, I began working for El Dorado County Animal Services as an Animal Control Officer.  There I would deal with a lot of livestock, fire evacuations, and wildlife.  I came to Elk Grove Animal Services in November 2018.  Here, I am looking to continue developing my skill set with the ultimate goal of someday being on the Executive team of HSUS.

Favorite Animal:

This is a tough question for me to answer.  I have to say elephants and horses are on equal playing ground in my heart.  I grew up riding horses and enjoy any chance I get to be around them.  Both animals are majestic and peaceful even though they can do damage if they pleased.

Pets you own:

I do not personally own any animals, but I love my fiancé's dog, Addie, who is a female miniature American Shepherd as if she is my own.   I also would add that she is the first dog I fully trust in any situation (kids, other dogs, etc) she is a great K9 ambassador.

Favorite part of your job:

My favorite part of my job is getting to help and be a part of something bigger than myself.  I get to help and meet so many two-legged friends as well as four-legged friends whether evacuating animals from a fire area or helping someone who has fallen on tough times and get resources for themselves or their animals.

Hobbies:

I mostly enjoy spending time with my family and friends, shooting, gaming, eating and beer!

Doreen Coberly

Administrative Assistant

Doreen CoberlyBackground with animals:

Animals have always been a part of my family. Growing up we had dogs, cats, rabbits, fish and even chipmunks. My father worked on a dairy so I was around cows, horses, goats and chickens. Some of my best memories were playing on the farm. I don't think there was ever a time we were without a pet.

Favorite animal:

I have always had a soft spot for dogs. I feel I can relate to dogs because of their characteristics such as being loyal and loveable.  I always enjoyed watching Charlie Brown with his loyal companion Snoopy.  Who didn’t want a beagle back then?  If everyone had the ability to love unconditionally as a dog, the world would be a better place.  “Happiness is a warm puppy” – Charles M. Schulz

Pets I own:

In my current household, I have 3 dogs in which all are rescues.  “Buster”, is our handsome 3-year-old Chihuahua mix.  He was named after Buster Posey from the San Francisco Giants and they share the same birthday, March 27.  “Chloe”, is our beautiful 2-year-old Chihuahua mix.  She is full of energy and gives Buster a run for his money.  Chloe has a heart shaped marking on her chest which makes her special in our eyes.  In March we rescued “Parker”, now an 8-month-old German Shepherd/Labrador mix (we think).  He just loves to ham it up. My daughter is training him in German and he seems to follow my husband everywhere he goes and loves to get in his way. One thing about Parker is that he thinks he is a Chihuahua since being raised with Buster and Chloe.

Favorite part of my job:

After working as a Police Dispatcher for the last 24 years I find working for and with the animals refreshing. I enjoy getting out and meeting members of the community. I help educate them on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. Also on licensing and microchipping their pets for quick return. And most of all, It is always a wonderful feeling when you can help an animal find its forever home.

Hobbies:

I enjoy spending time with my family, my husband Bruce, my daughter Chaela and my new addition to my household, my 12-year-old grandson James.  We enjoy traveling, trips to Disneyland, Giants baseball and Charger football games. We also like visiting haunted places and are currently on a quest to visit every mission in California.

Leslie MeekerCustomer Service Specialist

Background with animals:

I started working in Animal Services in April 2018.  I have been around cats, dogs, and horses my entire life.  I am extremely excited to be a part of our new animal shelter and having the opportunity to reunite lost animals with their owners and also helping find a happy/healthy family for our shelter animals.

Favorite animal:

I loved dogs, bears and tigers

Pets you own:

I have 3 dogs.  My oldest dog is a 13-years old Beagle named Lucy.  Then the other 2 dogs technically are my grand fur-babies; however, I am the one who feeds and plays with them.  They are a 5-year old Pit/Labrador named Tippy and a 1-year old Dalmation/Pit named Remi.

Favorite part of your job:

I enjoy interaction with the animal owners in Elk Grove.  I am a very out-going person, so this job truly suits me.  I love seeing the animals our Animal Control Officers occasionally pick up and bring into the office for a visit.  Once the shelter opens, I believe my favorite part of the job will be seeing our shelter animals going to a loving home.

Hobbies:

I enjoy camping, going to the ocean, traveling with my family and friends.
