Animal Shelter to Temporarily Limit Public Access

Press Release

Press Release - Amid COVID-19 concerns, Elk Grove Animal Shelter to temporarily limit public access

Posted: 03/17/2020

Based on the current Federal, State, and local recommendations as it relates to COVID-19, Elk Grove Animal Shelter will limit access to the public until further notice while continuing to offer essential services. We are committed to ensuring the health and welfare of our residents, their pets, the animals in our care, and our employees.

We ask for the public’s cooperation in reducing the number of people accessing the Animal Shelter. Shelter access will be limited to people in need of an essential service, or by appointment only. Casual visits, tours and volunteer opportunities are temporarily suspended until after the public health recommendation for social distancing is removed.

Essential services will be offered in the following ways:

  • Return to Owners (RTO)

Animals who have been picked up as strays can be reunited with their owners by setting an appointment. Please notify us online or call us at (916) 687-3042 to set an appointment.

  • Adoptions

We have made a concerted effort to place our adoptable animals in foster homes through the end of March as the health situation evolves. If you are interested in adopting a specific animal, please complete an interested party survey.

  • Trap, Spay/Neuter- Return (TNR)

We have suspended this service until further notice.

  • Healthy Strays

We highly recommend keeping/fostering healthy strays and using online resources such as PetHarbor, PawBoost, Nextdoor, Elk Grove Pets Lost and Found and neighborhood social pages or groups to help locate owners. If you are unable to care for the pet while searching for an owner, stray animals can still be brought to the shelter during normal hours.

  • Licensing

Pet licenses are only being accepted by mail or online. We will not conduct any in person license transactions at the shelter. Because of this we are giving an additional 30-day grace period before a late fee will be assessed.

  • Owner Surrenders

Pet owners considering surrendering their pets should delay doing so. If this is not possible, please contact us for additional resources.

Animal Service officers will continue to respond to emergency calls for service including dangerous dogs, sick or injured animals, police assistance, animals creating a hazard, bite reports, animal cruelty investigations, and domestic animals in the roadway.

We are managing our animal population closely, and will remain committed to our mission, vision, and values as we attempt to navigate this most difficult time. We will update our communication as conditions change.

If you have any questions please reach out via email at animalservices@elkgrovepd.org or via phone at (916) 687-3042.
