Tourism Veteran David Brooks to Lead Destination Marketing Organization

David Brooks ImageToday, the City of Elk Grove and the newly formed destination marketing organization, Visit Elk Grove, announced the hiring of the organization’s first Executive Director, David Brooks.

Brooks, a 13-year tourism industry veteran, most recently served as the Executive Director of Pennsylvania’s Potter County Visitors Association (PCVA) where he received multiple marketing and leadership awards from community and industry partners including outstanding website, outstanding leader, and business person of the year. During his tenure at PCVA, Brooks increased traveler spending in Potter County by $10 million, the strongest growth of any tourism region in the state of Pennsylvania.

Joseph Pickett, General Manager of the Hampton Inn & Suites and Visit Elk Grove’s Chairman, says that the Board was very careful to select a candidate that understood the entrepreneurial nature of the role and was up to the challenge it presented.

“The Executive Director will be the first leader of a brand new startup organization that has no other staff and limited brand recognition,” Pickett says. “David’s experience in building a tourism organization and creating a destination brand — practically as a one-man show — will serve Visit Elk Grove very well.  It was critical that the Board identify somebody who could hit the ground running and know what success looks like; we are confident David is that person.”

The City of Elk Grove’s Economic Development Director, Darrell Doan, believes Brooks will be a huge asset to the City and its economic development efforts, too.

“David understands the opportunities to drive visitors to Elk Grove by capitalizing on planned projects and fostering new ideas that change the perception of tourism here,” said Doan. “Our economic development team looks forward to partnering with David and Visit Elk Grove to acquaint new visitors with Elk Grove’s unique brand of hospitality.”

Brooks, who is relocating to Elk Grove from Pennsylvania and starts at Visit Elk Grove on August 1, says he’s already strategizing on his outreach efforts and first 30-days plan.

“What a fantastic and unique opportunity to create a destination marketing organization and market its destination from the ground up,” says Brooks. “My number one priority is outreach, and quickly getting to know Elk Grove’s community and business partners. I’m honored to have earned the trust and vote of the Board to be their first leader, and can’t wait to get started.”
