Press Release - Elk Grove Takes Steps to Protect Community, Limit COVID-19 Spread

Posted: 03/10/2020

To limit the spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk for COVID-19, the City of Elk Grove has announced it will postpone some events scheduled through the end of March. This move is in accordance with new California Department of Public Health guidelines for mass gatherings and made at the recommendation of Sacramento County health officials to reduce the potential for community transmission. In these guidelines, the City is following Scenario II, which includes recommendations for mass gatherings and community events in counties with evidence of community transmission.

The City plans to postpone the following events:

  • Peace and Love: A Musical Revue of the 60’s (March 20)
  • Home Energy Expo (March 21)

No new dates for these events have been set. Ticketholders for the musical revue will be contacted directly. This information will also be broadcast through the City’s social media platforms.

On Monday, the Sacramento County Department of Health Services shifted their COVID-19 strategy from containment to community mitigation. The change relies on local communities to support this strategy by discouraging large public gatherings that are likely to attract older adults and people with chronic medical conditions who are at higher risk for catching the virus. Because the situation continues to evolve rapidly, the City could reevaluate and extend its decision to include additional events if circumstances warrant further postponements or cancellations.

To help keep all of our community members safe, the City encourages residents to stay home if they’re feeling sick, wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching their face with unwashed hands, cover coughs, avoid crowds as much as possible, and to practice social distancing. Avoid shaking hands and put more space between yourself and others.
