03/15/2017 UPDATE: The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has nearly
completed its evaluations of the underground natural gas pipeline. These
evaluations were required to meet federal safety regulations. Crews are on
standby to repave and reopen the roadway as soon as the evaluations are
complete. The City and SMUD apologize for the inconvenience generated by
this extended closure. Public safety is our highest priority and we
sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work to ensure
the safe reopening of this segment of Franklin Boulevard.

The southbound lanes of Franklin Boulevard between Elk Grove Boulevard and Percheron Drive will remain closed through early next week in order to complete pavement repairs generated by recent storms.
To protect the public, city staff closed the lanes to traffic on March 1 when pavement along 75 feet of both southbound lanes appeared settled. The settling occurred in proximity to a SMUD natural gas transmission pipeline and SMUD was notified. Since that time, SMUD crews and contractors have been conducting inspections and assessments at the site. SMUD’s staff reports that there are no leaks and there is no reason for public safety concern. SMUD’s safety policy and federal regulations require inspection when incidents like subsidence occur near gas pipelines.
Once their investigation is complete, SMUD crews and contractors will make the necessary road repairs and coordinate with City staff to open the southbound lanes.
Northbound lanes on Franklin Boulevard remain open. Detour signs are posted directing southbound motorists to take Bruceville Road during the closure. Staff will continue to update the City’s web site and social media platforms as new information becomes available.
