Welcome to the City of Elk Grove’s Online Multicultural Book Club!
If you have traveled the roads, entered a restaurant or visited a school in Elk Grove you have seen the City’s diversity first-hand. Elk Grove, and the Region as a whole, are among the country’s most diverse areas. In fact, 2010 U.S. Census data confirms Elk Grove is among the top 25 most diverse places in the entire nation. Diversity is, indeed, a way of life for those of us who live, work and play in Elk Grove!
Books are a great way to learn about, and gain appreciation for, other cultures. In an effort to celebrate Elk Grove’s diversity while providing a resource for building cultural competency, the City of Elk Grove and the Sacramento Library have teamed up to provide reading lists with titles designed to educate and enlighten readers of all ages. The Multicultural Committee intends to expand on these lists with time. We hope to include titles and authors from as many cultures as we can. Be sure and check back often for new titles and authors! In the meantime, if you have suggestions, please email them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Make the Road to Cultural Competency Your Own
The online book club can be applied formally or informally. Read alone and at your own pace, or build discussions groups with others who are interested in learning about other cultures. Then meet, discuss and grow together!
Cultural Competency in the Classroom
Teachers, encourage your students to read from the appropriate list. Add impact by making it part of the curriculum or initiating a contest or other challenge. Encourage your students to discuss what they have read. Use the resources below or add your own creativity to involve your students.
We’ve also included links to other helpful sites. Use these resources to learn about the many cultures of your neighbors, coworkers and friends. Read on Elk Grovians!
