At the September 14, 2011 City Council meeting, the Elk Grove City Council passed a Healthy Eating Active Living resolution, making Elk Grove part of a growing statewide movement to improve the physical activity and food environments for all residents. HEAL Cities commit to incorporating healthy options in three focus areas: land use, foods and employee wellness.
The Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Campaign is a partnership between the League of California Cities, the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, and more than 80 cities throughout the Golden State. Supporting healthy choices is essential to address the obesity epidemic among California’s children and adults, currently costing the state more than $41 billion annually in healthcare and lost productivity.
The City of Elk Grove recognizes that obesity is a serious threat to the health and wellbeing of our residents. While individual lifestyle choices are necessary, residents need an environment in which they can make healthy choices and thrive.
The City of Elk Grove is committed to creating policies that support public health, physical activity, safety and local food production and distribution. We’ve also signed our name to promoting healthy lifestyles at City Hall, to provide our staff with an employee wellness program, and to set a positive example for other businesses to follow.
