The City of Elk Grove has been reexamining its private property parking regulations related to recreational vehicles (boats/RVs/trailers). Some reports in the media have incorrectly stated that the City Council has repealed restrictions preventing recreational vehicles to be parked in driveways and on the street side yard of homes. The City of Elk Grove wants to be clear that no such decision has yet been made. While the City Council had previously indicated that it would consider code revisions and more relaxed parking standards. That decision has not been formally made. And, the prior direction to staff to relax parking standards is, itself, being reconsidered.
Recreational vehicle parking restrictions are contained in the City’s Zoning Code. Amendments to that code require a public hearing before the Planning Commission and the City Council. At its February 22, 2017 meeting, the City Council directed staff to prepare revised and relaxed standards for recreational vehicle parking. That direction initiated a process toward revising the City’s Zoning Code, which would have required public hearings before the Planning Commission and the City Council before the change was formalized. During its March 22, 2017 meeting, the Elk Grove City Council acknowledged a significant citizen response opposed to changes to the existing code. Council, therefore, directed staff to bring this issue back to the Council on April 12 for further direction, without scheduling a Planning Commission hearing. Council indicated that it intended to provide revised direction to maintain the current restrictions and take no action to amend the Zoning Code. Keep in mind that no such final decision has yet been made, and the public will have any opportunity to comment on the issue at this meeting.
Reports that residents have begun cancelling their storage contracts and moving their RVs to their homes has reached the City’s code enforcement team. City staff encourages residents to carefully consider the information in this notice before taking any action on any existing storage contract or recreational vehicle parking.
