COVID-19 Change in services: Adoptions at the animal shelter continue with new COVID-19 safety measures in place. If you’re interested in adopting a pet from the shelter, please read the following information:

Interested in a dog or adult cat?

  1. Browse our adoptable pets here on the website, or at or
  2. If you see someone you would like to adopt, call us at (916) 687-3042 and press 3 to leave a voicemail in our Adoption Interest Inbox. You must leave your name, phone number, and the Animal ID number of the animal you are interested in to be placed on that animal's interested party list. Please note this is not a guarantee you will receive a call back since some animals are extremely popular and may generate dozens of voicemails.
  3. If/when you become first on the interested party list, a member of our adoption team will call you to provide an over-the-phone adoption consultation. If it seems like a good fit, they will schedule you to come to the shelter for an adoption* appointment.

*Potential adopters will have the opportunity to meet the animal they are interested in before finalizing an adoption.

How to Adopt

Please note, our adoption process is currently altered due to COVID. Read the instructions at the top of this webpage to adopt at this time.

Adopters may visit our shelter anytime during open hours to browse animals available for adoption. All our available animals will have adoption profiles posted on the kennel to tell you a bit more about them (such as their name, age, energy level, etc). If you have any questions or you would like to meet with an animal outside of their cage, please find a volunteer or staff member to assist you. Please note that you must 18 or older to meet with and adopt an animal.

Once you have identified an animal you are interested in adopting, a member of our Animal Care team will be available to counsel your adoption and you will be asked to fill out an Adoption Questionnaire to help us make sure the animal you’ve selected is a good match for your households. Remember we are here to help set you and your new pet up for success, so we reserve the right to deny any adoption.

After you have successfully completed your adoption counsel, one of our Customer Service Representatives will assist you in finalizing your adoption. You will be required to provide a valid driver’s license or state-issued ID, sign an adoption contract. All of our animals are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated up to what their age allows. We will provide you with their full medical history, any relevant behavior notes, and a folder full of goodies to help you welcome your new pet home.
