This 14-week program provides interns with a unique opportunity to learn about EGPD from the inside out.
Interns will have the opportunity to:
- Work side-by-side with law enforcement professionals
- Be a part of a team providing cutting-edge services to Elk Grove residents
- Build relationships with interns in other departments
- Meet with EGPD leadership
- Identify an area of interest and a pathway to success in that field
Interns Will Work In One Of The Following Departments
Problem Oriented Policing (POP)
- Respond via email and phone to community complaints regarding:
- Homelessness
- Neighbor disputes
- Nuisance properties
- Repeat noise disturbances
- Alcohol and tobacco sales to minors
- Any other community complaints routed to the Problem Oriented Policing (POP) Unit
- Assist with bike unit inventory
- Attend community events and meetings with POP officers
- Occasionally ride along with Homeless Outreach and POP Officers
- Assist with any other administrative and office duties as assigned
Property and Evidence
The Property & Evidence Bureau is offering an internship to learn about the duties and responsibilities of an evidence technician. The intern will have an opportunity to learn about various aspects of the position, which may include:
- General overview of the role of the evidence technician in a law enforcement agency
- Principles of evidence handling to include intake, storage, temporary transfer of custody for processing and investigation.
- Laws and regulations governing evidence handling, including chain of custody.
- Retention of evidence based on statute of limitations and laws governing biological evidence.
- Laws governing the release of firearms.
- Case review and disposition of property and evidence- retention, release, destruction
- The role of Forensics
The intern will perform various duties, which may include:
- Shadowing an evidence technician in the performance of their duties.
- Triage property requests and schedule appointments
- Assist in the escheatment of unclaimed funds in evidence.
- Attempt to match found property to reported lost and stolen property.
- Reconcile inventory of in custody firearms with records from the Automated Firearms System of the Department of Justice.
Animal Services
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate intern to join our team as a Volunteer Program Intern. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the success of our organization, gain hands-on experience in animal welfare, and play a vital role in managing our volunteer program.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and training of new volunteers
- Provide guidance and support to volunteers while fostering a positive and collaborative environment
- Assist in organizing and promoting volunteer appreciation events and activities
- Collaborate with the shelter staff to ensure seamless integration of volunteers into daily operations
- Work directly under the Volunteer/Events Coordinator to help improve our existing volunteer program
- Update job descriptions and other training materials for volunteers
Qualifications
- Comfortable working around cats, dogs, and other small animals
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Detail-oriented with good organizational and time management skills
- Passion for animal welfare and a desire to make a positive impact

Forensics
This internship provides an opportunity for candidates to gain observational and hands on experience, as well as gain essential job knowledge by participating in the day to day operation of the Forensics Unit. Interns will be exposed to a variety of tasks and will be directly supervised and mentored by working Forensic Investigators.
Duties vary, depending on current project needs. Duties may include responding to crime scenes, data entry, maintaining equipment and supplies, working in a laboratory setting, and assisting staff with the daily routine operations.
Assignments may provide observational or hands on experience related to the following activities:
- Identification and collection of DNA, fingerprints and physical evidence
- Documentation and collection of firearms and toolmarks
- Development and collection of fingerprints
- Crime scene photography
- Sketching and computer-aided design (CAD)
- Latent print comparison
- Documentation, collection, examination of footwear and tire track evidence
- Deployment of high speed 3-D laser scanner
- Exposure to death investigations and other investigations of a sensitive
Educational Preference
Those applying for an internship are expected to be pursuing or have recently completed a bachelor's degree in forensic science, criminal justice, or other closely related science. Photography course work is also highly desired.
The Ideal Candidate Is:
- Passionate about public safety

- Available 16-24 hours per week, Monday-Friday during normal business hours
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must complete an interview and pass a background check
