What does the Census tell us about Elk Grove?
The Census data provides a wealth of information about our community.
Why is the Census Important?
The census happens only once every decade. It is used for the following purposes:
- Deciding how over $675 billion in annual federal funding is distributed to States, Counties and Localities. More information on how federal funding is distributed to California
- Determines the number and boundaries for numerous elected offices. The number of seats that California will have in the U.S. House of Representatives and the number of Electoral College votes are determined by Census data. California state Assembly and state Senate legislative district boundaries are determined based on Census data.
- The City, the Elk Grove Unified School District and the Cosumnes Service District use Census data to better understands the residents and needs of our community and help plan for new schools, improving transportation, supporting public safety and emergency preparedness and building new parks.
- Businesses use Census data to determine where to locate factories, warehouses, restaurants, and retail stores, where they can find new employees or new customers.
