Posted:06/27/2024

In anticipation of daily temperatures topping the century mark starting early next week, the City of Elk Grove and Cosumnes Community Services District will open a cooling center beginning on Monday, July 1 and operating daily from Noon to 8 p.m. through Friday, July 5 at the Wackford Community Complex at 9014 Bruceville Road. Operating dates may be extended if similar conditions persist over the Independence Day holiday.

Organizers are initiating the opening of the cooling center in response excessive heat forecasted for the region by the National Weather Service Sacramento. The Cooling Center is open to anyone who lacks shelter or adequate home cooling. A limited number of animal kennels will be available to house pets, if needed.

Hot days pose a danger of heat related illness for anyone outside for an extended time. People of all ages are encouraged to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid outdoor activities in the direct sun from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and
  • Keep hydrated; and
  • Stay in a cool space.
